Up for sale here is a sashiko button down shirt from the Beams Plus label. Beams Plus is one of the several labels run by the Beams company, mainly a “select shop” operating out of Japan. Where Beams was previously more a shop for other brands, they’ve been getting increasingly into clothes production as well, with Beams Plus being one of their flagship labels. There are a number of other sub-labels such as Beams Heart, Beams Boy, International Gallery Beams, bpr Beams, Fennica, Beams Golf, etc. However, Beams Plus is perhaps their best known outside of Japan, and their only label (to my knowledge) to have distribution abroad.
Beams Plus tends to steer pretty strongly toward vintage-inspired work and casual wear, producing at a very high level of quality. Designs are pretty timeless, where they avoid flashy colors and big logos, opting more for quality construction and fits.
This is a somewhat unusual piece from Beams Plus. Silhouette follows the classic button down pretty closely, but the twist comes in the construction. The shirt has a patchwork design, where it is made up of a number of different patches individually sewn together. All of the patches are the same shade and relatively the same size, with different stitching methods used on them. Some patches are solid, some use a herringbone twill, and others use the sashiko sewing technique. Sashiko is a traditional Japanese method of sewing, adding in extra lines of stitching to reinforce the fabric and give it extra weight. Here the different sewing patterns serve to create a nice visual contrast. You can also be sure that give the construction method here this was a considerably more time consuming piece to produce compared to a more standard button down shirt.
Size is labeled an extra large and fits true. I measure the chest at 22” / 56cm, shoulders at 19.5” / 50cm, and length at 28” / 71cm in front and 29.5” / 75cm in back, both from the base of the neck. The shirt comes in lightly used, excellent shape with no holes, tears, stains, or visible signs of wear.
