Chamula Monitaly yuketen hand woven shirt, made in Mexico, size S (fits M)

$34.99

Up for sale here is a really interesting shirt from the Chamula label, a label run by the Meg Company, the same people that produce the Monitaly and Yuketen labels and overseen by Yuki Matsuda. Where Monitaly and Yuketen are almost entirely made in the US, Chamula is exclusively produced in Mexico. They specialize in hand-made garments, particularly hand-knit sweaters and leather shoes. Aside from being entirely hand made, Chamula also incorporates a lot of traditional Mexican motifs into their designs.

This is a rare plaid shirt from Chamula. They are still producing sweaters, leather shoes and accessories, but have actually stopped producing shirts. The big appeal with this shirt is the fabric, where this looks to be made on a vintage style shuttle loom. It’s not a hand weave in itself, but definitely incorporates a lot of hand processing. The fabric is a pleasantly uneven weave incorporating those hand processes as noted. Color is a mix of yellow, red and black threads as you can see on close inspection. It is a pretty unique weave, where there is a lot of texture and character to the fabric, again indicating its hands-on character.

Chamula produces some truly excellent quality pieces, always in limited quantities and with limited availability. Still, they are well worth checking out if you haven’t already. These pieces are now long gone, but get it here at the cheapest price around.

Size is labeled a small and has a relaxed fit, more like a standard medium. I measure the chest at 21”, shoulders at 18”, length at 28.5” in front and 30” in back, both from the base of the neck, and sleeves at 23” from the shoulder. The shirt comes in lightly used, very good shape. There is a small stain on the front, towards the bottom-left side, but otherwise no holes, tears or stains. Made in Mexico.
