A pretty rare piece for sale here from one of Japan’s smaller vintage-inspired labels. Not only is there a pretty large range of labels in Japan that look to vintage Americana for their inspiration, but they often specialize even further than that. The Real McCoys, for example, have a number of sub lines that explore different branches of vintage clothing (Buco for bike wear, 8 Hour Union for work wear, Ball Park for sportswear, etc.), the Flat Head often go for 50s-era rock-n-roll, Buzz Rickson for military wear, and so on. Another facet of this movement is in looking at vintage outdoors wear, which is where Corona comes in. There are a few other labels that do something similar, perhaps most notably a label called Colimbo, in that they aim to create extremely functional outdoors wear, looking primarily at vintage pieces for inspiration.
As you might expect with outdoors-looking pieces, their jackets are often very strong and tend to be at the center the collections for labels like Corona. Still, they also make a full line, with the quality excellent all around and the attention to detail easily rivaling any of the bigger labels.
In this case we have a shirt, although less outdoor-focused and more vintage inspired. Silhouette appears to be based on classic sailor shirts, although the fabric has been changed around a bit. Fabric here is a light weight, indigo dyed wabash fabric. It’s one of those pieces that references vintage Americana. Fabric is pretty light weight, making this a good warm weather piece. The wabash print is done through indigo discharge printing, where like any good indigo piece this will gradually fade and develop with wear. Front features a sailor style collar, open neck, and a single buttoned chest pocket. This is definitely a unique piece, something that you don’t typically come across and are not very likely to find again anytime soon.
Like many similarly-minded labels, Corona can be pretty hard to track down, especially outside of Japan. Retail in Japan was about $200, but get it here in very good shape and at a much more reasonable price.
Size is labeled a large and fits true. I measure the chest at 22”, shoulders at 19”, length at 26” and sleeves at 23” from the shoulder. The shirt comes in lightly used, very good shape with no holes, tears, stains or visible fading of the indigo. Made in Japan.
Shipping from Japan to anywhere will be $24.
