For sale here is a snap button western style shirt from the Flat Head. The Flat Head are one of the perhaps better known Japanese “repro” brands out there. That is, they specialize in reproductions of classic American vintage and workwear. But like the best of the repro labels, they add quite a bit. While the designs may be timeless, the detailing and quality are in another class. That’s where the Flat Head excels.
This shirt is one of Flat Head’s knit plaids. Material is a fairly light weight knit cotton. Flat Head is all about developing unique fabrics, using some of the highest quality materials available. Design in this case is based on the classic western shirt, but the fabric has quite a bit of texture to it, more texture than you would normally expect from lighter weight cotton to be sure. This is likely one of those loomed pieces done super old school. If you look at the detailed pics, you can see quite a bit going on with the color and weave. The base is made up of black and white threads, with a sort of elevated red thread that provides additional texture. However they pulled this off, it really brings the material to another level.
Other details include substantial mother of pearl buttons, side gussets, and selvedge line on the interior button placket (it is there but not especially visible in the pics). It is also pretty uncommon to include the selvedge line for a plaid shirt, but Flat Head always goes the extra mile. Once you experience what a label like the Flat Head is capable of in terms of quality, it’s really hard to go back to a standard cotton button down.
The Flat Head has limited availability even in Japan, and can only be found at a handful of very specific specialty shops outside of Japan. For those in the know they’re well worth it, but these shirts retail in the $300 range outside of Japan. Get it here much more reasonably.
Size is labeled a 40. Fit is like a standard medium. I measure the chest at 20” / 51cm, shoulders at 18” / 46cm, length at 27” / 69cm and sleeves at 24” / 61cm. The shirt comes in lightly used, very good shape with no holes, tears, stains or obvious signs of wear. Made in Japan.
