Up for sale here is a type II jacket from the Oni label, one of the smaller Japanese denim specialist labels, although unlike a good number of Japanese brands these guys seem to have fairly decent distribution abroad. They’ve also got a bit more notoriety because of it, but it is very much deserved. Oni doesn’t put out a large range of products, but what they do release is always something special. These guys are very much on the “specialist” side of denim, where all of their pieces are some really unique denims, usually very slubby, highly uneven and with a lot of character. This is often achieved using vintage shuttle looms which allow for much more of a handmade feel.
This comes from Oni’s pretty limited jacket range. Silhouettes are usually classic type II and type III jackets, although the materials are often very unique. These jackets are produced in summer and winter weight fabrics, usually with pretty unique dye jobs as well. So what we have here is a spring-summer 2024 release, a new and limited Oni model. Model number is ONI-02516P-OFBD, otherwise known as the “old faded blue denim” jacket. This is a 13.7oz denim, which is a medium weight and ideal for year-round wear. It is probably not best in extreme cold or heat, but should otherwise work well. Fabric is Oni’s signature highly textured, somewhat irregular weave. These pieces are done on vintage shuttle looms and really no one comes close to the textures that Oni produces. If you are into denim they are well worth seeking out. The twist here is that the fabric is a medium blue shade of indigo, rather than a dark blue. Oni likens this to a faded color, although there is no damage processing or anything like that here. As with any quality indigo, the color should continue to develop and fade with wear.
Silhouette here is a modified type II jacket. It is modified in the sense that the length is a bit longer and hand pockets are incorporated, making things nice and convenient. Details include red selvedge lines on the interior of the jacket and cuff interiors, branded metal buttons throughout, and a very cool custom vegetable tanned leather patch. Retail on these jackets is about $400. Get it here in excellent shape at a more reasonable price.
Size is labeled a 42 and fits like a standard large. I measure the chest at 22”, shoulders at 19”, length at 28” from the base of the neck and sleeves at 26” from the shoulder. The jacket comes in lightly used, excellent shape with no holes, tears, stains, fading of the indigo or really any signs of wear at all. Made in Japan.
