Up for sale here is a shirt from the Hysteric Glamour label. Hysteric Glamour has a long history in Japanese fashion, dating back to 1984. They have gone through several iterations in design, but have always looked to incorporate rock music style into their pieces. Hysteric Glamour have done a number of collaborations with high-profile and cult rock bands including Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, the Cramps, T Rex, and many many more. Their main inspiration comes from rock music from the 1960s through 80s in particular. The other side of Hysteric Glamour is the surprisingly high quality of materials they use. For a long time they have been a part of the Ozone Community company (who also used to manufacture a line called “ozone rocks”), who specialize in using organic materials.
With all of that said, this shirt is a bit more straightforward and avoids any direct musical references. Aside from band tees and prints, Hysteric Glamour also manufacture more straightforward and understated designs. The rock influence is still apparent, although this shirt is not beholden to any particular genre or style. Inspiration seems to come from classic plaid shirts, done in this case in a summer weight. What we basically have here is Hysteric Glamour’s interpretation of the classic plaid work shirt, done in a very high quality execution with a few little details and tweaks.
Material is a 60% linen, 40% cotton blend, the kind of detailed knit where you can see all of the individual threads woven together on close inspection. Pockets are asymmetric in style and the left pocket has a fairly subtle brand logo stamped on the button. The shirt also has a somewhat unusual, vintage-inspired button placket, as well as side gussets with chain stitch runoff.
Hysteric Glamour has long enjoyed a cult following in Japan (and abroad), never compromising on the quality of their products. You can be sure you are getting a top quality piece here as well. Retail on these shirts is currently about $300 in Japan alone and more abroad if you can find them. Get one here much more reasonably.
