Up for sale here is an indigo dyed sweater from Stevenson Overall Co. is another one of those Japanese “American causal” labels. They make a number of nods to old-time clothes, taking elements from early functional clothing (including workwear, military and outdoor clothing) and mixing them with their own unique take. It’s a similar approach to what Mister Freedom does, although for Stevenson Overall it strikes me as more workwear-oriented, rather than the more military-inspired flavor Mister Freedom often has. Either way, as you can probably expect, these are produced to exacting specifications with excellent quality and attention to detail.
With that said, what we have here is a pretty interesting piece. This is a somewhat low gauge yarn knit sweater that has been indigo dyed. The main material is an indigo dyed cotton yarn. It looks to me that this was dyed in the yarn phase, rather than as a finished garment, which creates quite a bit more depth and unevenness in the color, as the different yarns are different shades of indigo blue. As with any good indigo piece, this should also pleasantly fade with continued wear, creating something totally unique to the wearer. The texture here is really cool, where the yarns kind of stick out here and there for a very unique effect. Silhouette has a wide neck and a mock-neck design. I haven’t seen anything quite like it elsewhere. As you might expect, these pieces were produced in very limited quantities and are now completely sold out.
Size is labeled a small and fits a bit loose, between a small and a medium in my opinion. There is a bit of stretch to the fabric but unstretched I measure the chest at 20” / 50cm, shoulders at 17” / 45cm, length at 25” / 65cm and sleeves at 25” / 64cm from the shoulder. The sweater comes in lightly used, very good shape with no holes, tears or stains. Made in Japan.
