Beams Plus + plaid brushed cotton shirt, made in Japan, size S

$34.99

Up for sale here is a plaid button down shirt from the Beams Plus label. Beams Plus is one of the several labels run by the Beams company, mainly a “select shop” operating out of Japan. Where Beams was previously more a shop for other brands, they’ve been getting increasingly into clothes production as well, with Beams Plus being one of their major offshoots. There are a number of other sub-labels such as Beams Heart, Beams Boy, International Gallery Beams, bpr Beams, Fennica, Beams Golf, etc. However, Beams Plus is perhaps their best known outside of Japan, and their only label (to my knowledge) to have distribution outside of Japan.

Beams Plus tends to steer pretty strongly toward vintage-inspired work and casual wear, producing at a very high level of quality. Designs are pretty timeless, where they avoid flashy colors and big logos, opting more for quality construction and fits.

That’s what you’ve got with this shirt too. Design is definitely classic, where we have a really nice woven plaid. This isn’t a printed fabric like some cheaper labels may go for- no corners are cut here. Making woven shirts like this is actually much more time consuming and extensive, but you can see and feel the difference in quality. Fabric also has a really nice, pleasantly uneven texture to it. In this case, it looks like the exterior side of the fabric has been brushed. This is a process more often done for the interiors of shirts (Iron heart, for example, brushes the interiors of their heavy flannels), but Beams have opted to do it here on the outside. Brushing is intended to loosen up the weave some, making the piece more comfortable in the process.

Other details here include side gussets with embroidered “+” mark in orange, subtle logo on the buttons, 1960s style three button collar (including a button on the back), and a pull on the rear shoulder seam. These shirts are not particularly cheap at retail, going for about $200 outside of Japan. Get it here much more reasonably.

Size is labeled a small and fits true. I measure the chest at 19”, shoulders at 16”, length at 25” in front and 27” in back, both from the base of the neck, and sleeves at 23.5” from the shoulder. The shirt comes in lightly used, excellent shape with no holes, tears, stains or obvious signs of wear. Made in Japan.

Shipping from Japan to anywhere will be $24.
