For sale here is a jacket from the Spellbound label, another in a long line of Japanese “American casual” brands. That is, Spellbound is strongly influenced by classic American workwear, although they tend to release their interpretations of workwear staples rather than simple re-hashes. As always with these types of labels, production runs are very small, with limited distribution even in Japan. Availability outside of Japan is even tougher, where only a handful of specialists stock them at the moment. Quality, however, is quite high. These are definitely painstakingly-made garments, done to a very high standard.
In this case we have a fairly light weight parka – fabric is cotton but it is fully lined in another layer of cotton on the interior. Exterior is a brown shade, similar to a cotton duck, while the interior is a knit khaki color. This is one of those military-inspired pieces, simplistic and timeless in design, very easy to wear, and easily integrated into a wide range of wardrobes. It is highly functional and should cover you well for most seasons.
Details include a long front zip that goes up to the neck, drawstring on the hood, and interior buttoned pocket. Spellbound is all about quality materials and construction, much less about flashy design. They’ve reworked a classic silhouette into something a bit more unique, but this obviously isn’t the sort of thing you would go for if you’re looking for big logos or that sort of thing. Spellbound keep an intentionally low profile, eschewing advertising and even a web presence, and let their clothes do the talking. This is a timeless design, something that is built to last.
Size is labeled a 3 and fits like a standard medium. I measure the chest at 21”, shoulders at approx. 18”, length at 26” in front and 26.5” in back, and sleeves at 24” from the shoulder. The jacket comes in lightly used, excellent shape, with no holes, tears, stains or obvious signs of wear. Made in Japan.
