Stone Island 2001aw double face cotton/nylon pants, size 52 (fits 34”)

$44.99

Up for sale here is a pair of pants from Stone Island. This particular pair comes from the fall-winter 2001 season, as you can see from the art number on the tag. Not that it matters too much, as this is some pretty classic SI, with simple yet effective detailing and a unique fabric. Stone Island is really a leader in technical apparel, pushing the boundaries of what is possible both in dyeing technology and in the types of textiles that can be incorporated into clothing.

In this case we have a classically-inspired silhouette, where the fabric is definitely interesting. This is a double faced fabric, where the exterior is a 71% cotton / 29% nylon blend, while the interior is a 100% cotton flannel fabric. Rather than being lined, the fabric is fully fused all the way through, and the combination of the two different materials makes these pretty good cold weather pants.

Being Stone Island, there are some other interesting details as well. For one, the fabric has been garment dyed a nice khaki shade. Stone Island, and their sister label CP Company, both specialize in garment dyeing their products, where they dye the constructed garment rather than the fabric first. You get a lot more variation and depth of color in garment dyed pieces compared to more standard dyes, although garment dyeing is also a more time consuming and expensive process. Waistband is lined in cotton (also garment dyed) and three lines of stitching, and also features a pull tab on the back side. There is a button fly, where all buttons are branded. Front has a coin pocket, while the rear has buttoned cinches on both sides.

Design here is perhaps a bit more subdued than some of the more recent Stone Island pieces, where this is more about letting the quality of the garment and the uniqueness of the material take precedence over any overt branding. Needless to say, these kinds of vintage pieces are now long gone too, increasingly sought after by collectors.

Size is labeled a 52 but fits a 34” waist. I measure the waist at 34”, inseam at 30”, rise at 11”, and leg opening at 9”. This is a straight leg fit, not too loose or too baggy in my opinion, but hitting that sweet spot between the two very well. The pants come in lightly used, very good shape with no holes, tears or stains.
