For sale here is a shirt from the Weirdo label, part of the family of labels from Japan’s Glad Hand shop, along with Gangsterville and a few others including Old Crow and Miss Ladybug. Glad Hand themselves aren’t exactly well known in Japan, and Gangsterville and Weirdo are probably even more obscure, but they’re all a part of the “American casual” movement that’s been going on for quite a while. That is, Glad Hand and its associated labels are strongly influenced by vintage American workwear. Where some other labels are maybe more inclined toward basic vintage reproduction, the Glad Hand family definitely incorporates their own aesthetic. Gangsterville goes for a 1940s vibe, Glad Hand has more of a vintage look, and Weirdo tends toward 1950s-era rock-n-roll for inspiration, much like the much better known Flat Head label, although as a name like “weirdo” might imply they also add a solid dose of humor into their designs. Also like Flat Head, Glad Hand cut no corners in their pieces. Although they produce very limited quantities and can be hard to come by even in Japan, the quality is really excellent. They’re one of those cult labels people talk about in hushed tones, willfully obscure but making some of the more interesting things out there.
So this shirt covers the vintage style design with a dose of humor bases pretty well. The material itself is one of Gladhand’s basic tees, which has then been silkscreened on both sides with some pretty unique, characteristically “weirdo” graphics. The front has some awesomely bad English (a personal favorite-- I love it when Japanese labels do this sort of thing), while the back has some silly face drawings. Interior also has the woven Werido neck tag, sewn on top of the Gladhand tag.
As noted, these pieces are pretty hard to track down even in Japan, and Gladhand products never come cheap. Retail would have been in the neighborhood of $100 for this piece.
Size is labeled a small and fits true. I measure the chest at 18”, shoulders at 17”, length at 25” and sleeves at 24” from the shoulder.
