Up for sale here is a shirt from 45 rpm’s Umii line. 45 rpm is perhaps best known for their high quality materials, attention to detail, and of course their indigo products. Production is always in small batches, and their pieces are only available direct from their shops. This shirt is from 45 rpm’s Umii subline, a loosely naval-inspired collection. Umii pieces are equal in quality, and really don’t have much difference from the 45 rpm main line most of the time.
This shirt is a great example of what 45 rpm is capable of, coming in an excellent fairly light weight knit. This is the sort of piece where the blue yarns have been indigo dyed, creating a pleasantly uneven feel to the plaid pattern. The fabric is definitely the main draw here, as the shirt already has some pretty beautiful contrasts and they will only get better with age as the indigo fades. The shirt is partially lined in the interior in a light weight indigo dyed chambray fabric, and the neck tag is embroidered with the Umii logo and also indigo dyed. It also includes side gussets and a chest pocket for good measure.
As always, there is a fair amount going on here and quality is really strong. These shirts don’t come cheap at all at retail, where these start at about $300 in Japan and go for even more abroad if you can find them. Still, you can be sure at that price point that you’re getting something pretty unique that has received a lot of care and attention in design. Then you have the advantage of getting it much more reasonably here.
Size is labeled a 4 and fits like a somewhat slim large, or maybe a loose medium depending on how you like the fit. I measure the chest at 21.5” / 54cm, shoulders at 18” / 46cm, length at 27” / 70cm in the front and 29” / 74cm in the back, both from the base of the neck, and sleeves at 24.5” / 62cm from the shoulder. The shirt comes in lightly used, very good shape with no holes, tears, stains or visible signs of wear. Made in Japan.
