Up for sale here is a jacket from Japanese label Dry Bones. The Dry Bones brand, like a number of smaller “American casual” Japanese labels, is pretty strongly influenced by vintage workwear. Where Dry Bones is a bit different, however, is in their application of influences. They’re very strongly rock-and-roll influenced, and equally likely to incorporate more traditional Japanese imagery into their designs. What you end up with is the quality, detailing and workmanship Japanese labels are known for, but also a pretty unique vintage-influenced design aesthetic that’s pretty strongly their own vision.
So here we have Dry Bones’ take on the coverall jacket, done in a fairly light weight 67% cotton, 33% linen blend. The material is pretty interesting and deserves some note. It is a highly textured weave with blue stripes. There are some pleasant irregularities and small variations in color throughout. This is most apparent on close inspection, but it is the sort of detailing that sets it apart from the pack. The linen count also makes the jacket nice and breathable, ideal for the warmer weather.
Details include four button blazer style closure, asymmetric pocket placement with one side pocket, one exterior chest pocket and an additional pocket on the interior, reinforced with metal rivets. Buttons are all metal, with the front buttons featuring a laurel wreath motif. Like a lot of the smaller Japanese labels, Dry Bones produces in very limited quantities, with limited availability even in Japan. They operate a handful of shops themselves, and as far as I know they’re not distributed to any other shops in Japan. They’ve got very limited distribution abroad as well. Self Edge used to stock them, but I think that’s about it. This jacket retailed in the $300 range in Japan (would have been more abroad if you could find it) and is now long gone. Get it here while you can for a fraction of that.
Size is labeled a 40/L and fits more like a medium. I measure the chest at 21” / 53cm, shoulders at 17” / 43cm, length at 27” / 68cm from the base of the neck, and sleeves at 25” / 63cm from the shoulder. The jacket comes lightly used, very good shape. There is a minor bit of wear on the neck but otherwise no holes, tears or stains. Made in Japan.
Shipping from Japan to anywhere will be $30.
