For sale here is a shirt from the Nonnative label. Nonnative are one of the more unique Japanese brands in that they don’t have a clear design inspiration. They’re sort of like Sophnet or Mister Hollywood in that sense, where seasonally they may have a unifying concept driving the collection, but they’re often more about making high quality, functional casualwear. For Nonnative, inspiration comes mainly from designer Takayuki Fujii’s own wardrobe and clothes that can be used for travel. Still, they’re consistently interesting and always creative in their approach to creating comfortable, well made and long lasting clothing. They’ve developed a pretty strong cult following as a result, and are getting increasing distribution outside of Japan.

With that said, what we have here is a fairly simple button down shirt. Nonnative call this their “adventurer shirt”. The idea is to keep things simple, straightforward and comfortable, yet to also keep the fit versatile and functional. Fabric is a cotton/poly taffeta in a 58% cotton, 29% polyester, 13% nylon blend with a really nice look and feel to it. The cotton/poly blend makes the piece nicely resilient and there are all kinds of outdoor-inspired details incorporated. These include an asymmetric pocket formation with an additional zipped pocket on the left side, a flat him with a side split, and a completely unique pattern with some really cool anatomic stitching that does not follow traditional shirt patterns. The detailing here is meant to ensure a more comfortable, ergonomic fit.

While Nonnative has been increasing its international presence, their full collections are still pretty hard to come by. Retail on this shirt was about 30,000 yen in Japan alone and quite a bit more abroad if you could find it, but get it here much more reasonably.

Size is labeled a 2, equivalent to a somewhat relaxed medium. I measure the chest at 21” / 53cm, shoulders at 19” / 49cm length at 28.5” / 73cm in front and 31” / 79cm in back, and sleeves at 24.5” / 62cm from the shoulder. The shirt comes in lightly used, very good shape with no holes, tears or stains. Made in Japan.
