Up for sale here is a sweater from the White Mountaineering label. White Mountaineering tends to run more toward the technical side of fashion, where as their name implies they often try to make functional clothes that also work outside of standard urban environments. The idea and execution is similar to what Nanamica or even the Arcteryx Veilance labels aim to do: creating functional clothing that both looks good and can perform well across a variety of situations.
The design here isn’t quite as technical as some of the other stuff you see from White Mountaineering, but there are definitely some interesting details here. Silhouette follows the classic crew neck, although comes in a more relaxed fit. The material is probably the main draw, where we have a cotton fleece used throughout here. Fleece is most typically done in polyester these days, a synthetic that normally does not age very well, and occasionally in wool which tends to be a lot more expensive. It is much less common to find a cotton fleece, which has the advantage of still providing nice heat retention while also being more easily washable and enjoying a longer lifespan. Silhouette and solid black design make this easily integrated across a variety of looks, and the sweater makes for a good comfortable, warm piece ideal for the colder weather.
White Mountaineering is one of those cult Japanese labels that has been able to gather a strong audience domestically while maintaining a pretty minimal presence abroad. As is often the case with these Japanese labels, White Mountaineering is produced in pretty limited quantities. Retail on their sweaters is around $300 in Japan, and this will cost you quite a bit more to get abroad.
Size is labeled a 2 and fits relaxed as noted, working well for a large or extra large. I measure the chest at 25” / 64cm, shoulders at 21” / 53cm, length at 27” / 69cm from the base of the neck, and sleeves at 25” / 64cm from the shoulder. The sweater comes in lightly used, very good shape with no holes, tears or stains. Made in Japan.
