Up for sale here is a pair of pants from the Funset of Art label. Funset of Art is a smaller-scale Japanese label that focuses on re-purposing vintage fabrics using traditional Japanese techniques such as sashiko and boro to create patchworked garments. Many Funset pieces are indigo dyed, coming in various stages of distressing, and often incorporating a considerable amount of hand work.
These pants are a great illustration of what Funset of Art does. The main body is an indigo dyed denim in 100% cotton. The denim is fairly light in weight, around 8oz or so I would guess, subject to some fading and distressing to give it a broken-in look. Silhouette is based on the Johdpur pant, with a somewhat looser thigh area that tapers down toward the ankles, with buttons coming up from the cuff allowing you to adjust the bottom portion of the leg to your liking. The big draw is on the leg interiors, where there is a really cool boro patchwork detail, using a variety of pieces of indigo dyed cotton in different shades, connected through sashiko stitching. This is a very traditional, labor-intensive design, one that looks beautiful as applied here.
These kinds of boro pieces are difficult to come across because of the considerable labor involved, and also very expensive at retail. As far as I know, Funset of Art have almost no international distribution, which is really unfortunate. Get an excellent piece here at the cheapest price around.
Size is labeled a large and fits a 32 inch waist well. I measure the waist at 32” / 82cm, inseam at 25” / 62cm, rise at 12.5” / 32cm, and leg opening at 7” / 16cm. As noted, being based on the Johdpur pant these pants have a longer rise and somewhat shorter inseam, where they should fall at about ankle length depending on your height. The pants come in lightly used, very good shape with no holes, tears or fading beyond their original condition. Made in Japan.
