For sale here is a pair of pants from Japanese denim label Kato Jeans. The Kato label dates back to the late 1990s, where they specialize in manufacturing denim and vintage Americana inspired pieces. More recently designer Hiroshi Kato has also started an American-based clothing label with similar ethos, although these jeans are from his Japanese range.
The Kato label is unique in that they place their own twist on the classic five pocket denim jean. Fabric is an indigo dyed 13.5 oz red selvedge denim. The pattern does not follow a standard straight line on the legs and waist but instead has a lot more curvature to follow the natural contours of the body. A lot of those curves are sewn in with a nicely contrasting orange chainseam thread, making the jean resilient while also presenting a more interesting visual contrast. Pocket and waistband formation are both completely unique here, and Kato opts to leave some extra threading on the rear and interior waistband tag, again creating a very nice contrast. Other details include a custom leather rear patch and branded buttons on the fly.
Kato’s Japanese line is particularly difficult to track down these days, especially outside of Japan, but the quality is definitely there and they are really nice if you are looking for something just a bit different.
Size is labeled a 32 and fits true. I measure the waist at 32” / 82cm, inseam at 32” / 81cm, rise at 10.5” / 26cm and leg opening at 8.5” / 21cm. This is a straight leg fit, neither too loose nor too baggy. The pants come in lightly used, very good shape. There is some fading on the interior materials tag but otherwise no holes, tears or stains. Made in Japan.
