Up for sale here is a pair of pants from Junya Watanabe, done in collaboration with the Hervier Productions French workwear brand. Like a lot of recent Junya, the pants draw their inspiration from traditional workwear (as you would expect with the collaboration), but add some twists.
The pants start with a cotton moleskin fabric. Moleskin is essentially a high gauge woven cotton, where the weave tighter and consequently the weight is heavier than a more typical cotton. Moleskin is a heritage workwear fabric, hard-wearing and naturally wind and water resistant. The French were actually one of the first moleskin producers and still have a few mills active today. That’s where this collaboration comes in: Hervier Productions is one of the handful of French manufacturers producing authentic moleskin, and they’ve handled the production of these pants as far as I can tell.
So like much of the Junya Watanabe line, these pants have a good mix of traditional and modern influences. The material definitely references vintage workwear and easily stands up, while the silhouette is a bit more modern. This is a somewhat slim cut, with a bit of a lower rise than a more classic fit. Details include a denim chambray lining on the interior waistband, vegetable ivory buttons, button fly, suspender buttons on the waistband, rear cinch back, and a single rear pocket. The pattern on the rear in particular is pretty unique, and is definitely something you would only find from Junya Watanabe. As noted on the tag, these pants are from 2012.
Size is labeled a small. Junya often cuts pants a bit looser than the tagged size would lead you to believe for some reason. I measure the waist here at 34” / 86cm, rise at 10” / 26cm, inseam at 28” / 71cm and opening at the bottom of the leg at 8” / 20cm. The pants come in lightly used, very good shape with no holes, tears, stains or visible signs of wear. Made in France.
