Sacai by Chitose Abe 2011aw striped cardigan, size 2 (M)

$39.99

For sale here is a sweater from Japan’s Sacai label, one of the perhaps more avant-garde designers going at the moment that is not directly affiliated with Comme des Garcons (although designer Chitose Abe got her start with CDG and Junya Watanabe). Like the best of the Japanese labels, Sacai has a very strong visual aesthetic, incorporating technical elements, a liberal use of color, and some very high quality knits. They tend to run a close parallel to the Kolor label, which happens to be run by her husband Junichi Abe.

This is Sacai’s pretty unique take on the classic cardigan. This is definitely one of the more creative interpretations of the cardigan. It looks like your more traditional cardi at first glance maybe, but there are all kinds of interesting details here. For one, the fabric is a totally unique 40% nylon, 25% lyocell, 20% angora, 15% rayon blend. What you have is a very soft, reasonably warm piece. There’s no itchiness at all here and the texture is just right. Rear is also completely different, done in a solid cable knit, making for a nice contrast.

Details include vintage style leather (?) button closure, reinforced button placket in nylon and two side pockets with what appears to be a nylon pocket lining. It is a piece that references vintage sweaters but at the same time makes something completely new and different. Sacai is one of those labels that produces in very limited quantities, and can be particularly hard (and expensive) to purchase outside of Japan. Retail on these sweaters was about $400 in Japan (and even more abroad). Get it here much more reasonably.

Size is labeled a 2 and fits like a medium. I measure the chest at 20”, shoulders at 17”, length at 26” in front and 28” in back, and sleeves at 27” from the shoulder (which can be cuffed). The sweater comes in lightly used, good shape. There is some minor piling throughout, but no holes, tears or stains. Made in Japan.

Shipping from Japan to anywhere will be $26.
