For sale here is an indigo dyed sweater fabric jacket from the Spellbound label, another in a long line of Japanese “American casual” labels. Spellbound is strongly influenced by classic American workwear, although they tend to release their interpretations of workwear staples rather than simple re-hashes. As always with these types of labels, production runs are very small, with limited distribution even in Japan. Availability outside of Japan is even tougher, but the quality however, is quite high. These are definitely painstakingly-made garments, done to a very high standard.
This is something a bit unique from Spellbound, where Spellbound more typically follow their vintage inspiration pretty closely, this piece aims for something a little bit different. Silhouette loosely follows the classic type I denim jacket (although it has side adjusters on the back rather than a cinch), while the fabric is completely different. Material here is a 94% cotton, 5% nylon, 1% polyurethane blend. It is indigo dyed but not denim – rather it is more of a sweater style fabric with a soft touch and a fleecey interior. This makes for an interesting juxtaposition, an indigo dyed jacket that looks like denim but feels like a sweater. It is definitely soft and comfortable, and can be worn either as a sweater or a jacket according to your preference.
Size is labeled a 2 and fits like a somewhat slim medium. I measure the chest at 19.5” / 50cm, shoulders at 17” / 43cm, length at 24.5” / 63cm, and sleeves at 24” / 62cm from the shoulder. This piece comes in lightly used, very good shape with no holes, tears, or stains. Made in Japan.
