Up for sale here is a wool jacket from the Sunny Sports label. Sunny Sports is another one of those Japanese labels strongly influenced by vintage Americana and work wear. They run a pretty wide gamut of clothing, where they do their own iterations of military, work and sportswear, but like many they filter classic design through their own aesthetic. Quality and detailing is pretty respectful of the originals, while the silhouettes are often slimmed down for a more modern look.
In this case we have Sunny Sports’ take on the classic coverall jacket, done here in a 70% wool / 20% polyester / 5% nylon blend. The jacket is entirely made in Japan, but seems to draw a lot of its inspiration in fabric from traditional Donegal tweed. The base tone is gray with a subtle black check, while there are felted balls of yarn randomly distributed throughout the jacket giving the cloth both extra texture and character.
Details include some very interesting art deco style buttons throughout, working cuffs, two large exterior side pockets, pocket reinforcements on the interior in a white cotton canvas, and an interior pocket as well. Sunny Sports has extremely limited international distribution at the moment, where they are currently stocked by only three shops outside of Japan (two in California and one in New York). It’s a bit surprising in that they are actually one of the bigger “American casual” labels in Japan at the moment. Either way, you can be sure that these jackets were produced in very limited quantities and were pretty much impossible to find outside of Japan.
Size is labeled a medium and fits true. I measure the chest at 21”, shoulders at 17”, length at 28” in front and 27” in back, both from the base of the neck, and sleeves at 24” from the shoulder. The jacket comes in lightly used, very good shape with no holes, tears, or stains. There is some minor piling on the back, but it is barely visible. Made in Japan.
